In addition to Resource Roundup, Members Only offered professional development articles for educators of all levels. I worked with experts in the field to acquire and publish monthly columns for elementary and secondary educators. Other “superstars” of the field provided quarterly articles.
Below are links to samples of some of the columns. For these columns, I acquired the content, negotiated the contracts, edited content, and managed design, production, and publishing on the IRA website.
Best Ever Literacy Survival Tips For New Teachers
When our market research uncovered that new teachers to the field were in great need of practical, “take to the classroom” strategies I asked Lori Oczkus to write this monthly column for new teachers. The column was a tremendous success with not only new teachers but experienced classroom teachers as well. It was so popular, I later worked with Lori to develop it into a bestselling professional development book. The Best Ever Literacy Survival Tipsbook continues to be a popular book today, seven years after the column was first published.
After the Best Ever Literacy Survival Tipsmonthly column was underway, I approached adolescent literacy experts Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey to contribute a monthly column offering classroom strategies for teaching adolescent literacy.
Veteran literacy consultant and author Regie Routman is one of the true leaders in the literacy field. She has written many bestselling books and her conference appearances are always standing room only. I also worked with Regie on conference appearances and a book for IRA. Her quarterly column on teaching tips for literacy was a welcome addition to Members Only.
When the Common Core State Standards was implemented, there was a lot of discussion about rigor in reading and writing instruction. I asked veteran literacy expert and co-author of Text Complexity: Raising Rigor in Reading to write a monthly column about rigor in literacy instruction meant and how to put it into practice in the classroom.
